Over the past few weeks, the Equal Trade Alliance Ghana team has been actively engaging with key stakeholders across the cocoa value chain, from traditional authorities to cocoa cooperatives, students and cocoa farmers. We are happy and proud to see the advocacy of the Equal Trade Alliance growing in Ghana.
Cocoa Farmer Community Engagements
The team visited several cocoa farming communities in Ghana among which Asamankese, Suhum, Oseim, and Koforidua. Close to Asamankese, we were honored to be welcomed by the community’s Chief, who showed great enthusiasm for ETA’s mission. With his support several cocoa farmers gathered to take part in a discussion and interviews about their living circumstances, challenges they face, and their view on the mission of Equal Trade.

A Powerful Conversation with the Equal Trade Ambassador in West Africa, Nana Tatse
Another major highlight for Equal Trade was the meeting with Chief Nana Tatse, who has recently been appointed ambassador of the Equal Trade Alliance. We spoke about the urgent need to transform the cocoa trade through legally binding revenue-sharing agreements, traditional leadership advocacy, and intercontinental- and generational justice. His ambassadorial role includes:
- Mobilizing traditional leaders across West Africa
- Championing farmer ownership in cocoa value chains
- Co-chairing the 2025 Equal Trade Cocoa Roundtable
- Amplifying the campaign through media and policy engagement
- Empowering the next generation of sustainable cocoa farmers
Joining forces with the traditional chieftaincy in Ghana marks a powerful step for Equal Trade in Africa.

GCCFA Joins the Equal Trade Alliance
We are proud to announce that the Ghana Cooperative Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Association (GCCFA) – representing over 421,000 cocoa farmers from 76 cooperatives – is now an official member of the Equal Trade Alliance. This milestone represents a huge step forward for farmer inclusion and collective voice within the equal trade movement.
During our visit to one of the GCCFMA’s unions, we held meaningful discussions with a group of female cocoa farmers. Their stories will be shared as part of our Testimonial Campaign.

Reaching the Next Generation in Koforidua
While in Koforidua, the team made a visit to a university in the town where we engaged the Student Representative Council on the importance of equal trade and their potential role as future change-makers. It’s important that we don’t only speak with farmers, our advocacy targets universities, academics, youth, but also civil society, media and policy makers as well!

What’s next?
As we continue to expand our outreach and capacities, our current focus is on connecting, engaging and mobilizing farmers and students, sharing the stories of cocoa farmers through our Testimonial Campaign, and preparing the 2025 Equal Trade Cocoa Roundtable in Accra to collectively implement Equal Trade in international trade policies.
